Our contribution to sustainable textiles

Sustainable textiles are increasingly doing without the classic raw materials cotton and crude oil. In 2011 A&E Gütermann successfully set the first milestone in sustainability with the introduction of the first recycled yarn Mara rPET. Back then we were the first sewing thread manufacturer in the world to offer a sustainable thread alternative made from 100 % recycled polyester.

From Fast Fashion to Slow Fashion

We encounter textiles every day in many different ways, whether as clothing, towels, seat covers, upholstered furniture or medical applications. Sustainability is paramount at every manufacturing step. Sustainability starts with product design. In the apparel industry, the trend is increasingly towards slow fashion. More and more high-quality products are being used that have a long service life and recycled materials. Sustainability is also an ongoing process at A&E Gütermann.

Sustainable fashion

Sustainable fashion is called sustainable and fair when the production focuses on the well-being of people and the environment. The focus is on ecological and social aspects. These include resource-saving processes with low water and energy consumption, the use of recycled, biodegradable materials, regional production and fair and social working conditions.

How is recycled sewing thread made?

1. PET bottles

The raw material is obtained from recycled PET bottles.

The PET bottles are washed and chopped into flakes. When the Flakes are melted down, they turn into granules …

Color comparison Mara rPET vs. Mara

Like our original products, we also offer our threads made from recycled polyester in a wide range of colours. The recycled raw material is darker than the non-recycled material. Thanks to our dyeing expertise, however, the colour difference in the dyed thread is minimal.

High tear resistance

Recycling is a process of reusing raw materials – meaning the material has been in use before. Nevertheless, our recycled products are in no way inferior to the original materials in terms of quality. Mara rPET offers the best sewing properties and tear resistance, which are at the same high level as a non-recycled thread.
